How to Write Product Descriptions That Sell — Frameworks, Templates & 27 Examples
Your product description is the salesperson who works 24 hours a day, never tires, never goes home. And in most e-commerce stores, that salesperson is asleep on the job — listing specs, repeating the title, or worse, copying the supplier's bland blurb. A well-written description can increase a product's conversion rate by 30–80% without changing anything else on the page.
This guide gives you the frameworks, the formulas, and 27 real examples you can copy and adapt. By the end you'll be able to write a description in 15 minutes that does more selling than your last 10 attempts combined.
The job a product description must do
It is not to "describe the product". The product photo already does that. The description has four jobs:
- Confirm the customer is in the right place — they searched for this, you have it, here it is in their words
- Translate features into benefits — "100% cotton" doesn't sell; "stays soft after 50 washes" does
- Crush objections before they form — "Will it fit?" "Is it easy to return?" "Does it actually work?"
- Push the click — a buyer who reads to the end without taking action is a buyer you lost
Everything that doesn't serve one of these four jobs is filler. Cut it.
The three frameworks that work for e-commerce
You can write 90% of all e-commerce descriptions with three classic frameworks. Pick one based on the product.
Framework 1 — PAS (Problem / Agitate / Solve)
Best for: problem-solving products (skincare, health, gadgets that fix annoyances).
- Problem — name a pain the customer recognizes
- Agitate — make the pain feel urgent (without being insulting)
- Solve — your product, and exactly how it solves it
Example (a sweat-absorbing T-shirt undershirt):
Underarm sweat stains ruin your favourite shirts and your confidence in meetings. Synthetic deodorants don't stop the wetness — they just add fragrance. Our cotton undershirt absorbs sweat before it ever reaches your outer shirt. Soft, invisible under any colour, washable 100+ times. One shirt saves five.
Framework 2 — AIDA (Attention / Interest / Desire / Action)
Best for: visual, lifestyle, or aspirational products (fashion, decor, beauty).
- Attention — a sharp line that stops the scroll
- Interest — a vivid detail or unexpected fact
- Desire — make them picture themselves owning it
- Action — tell them exactly what to do next
Example (a leather laptop sleeve):
Most laptop sleeves protect your laptop. Few make you proud to take it out. Full-grain Algerian leather, hand-stitched in a small workshop in Tlemcen, gets richer with every year of use. Slip it out of your bag at a café and the conversation starts itself. Order today — every sleeve is made to your laptop's exact size after you order, no two are identical.
Framework 3 — FAB (Feature / Advantage / Benefit)
Best for: technical or specification-heavy products (electronics, kitchen tools, anything with options).
- Feature — the spec
- Advantage — what that spec does
- Benefit — what that means for the customer's life
Example (an air fryer):
5.5L capacity (Feature) means you cook a whole chicken in one batch (Advantage) — dinner for a family of five is ready in 28 minutes flat, no second oven needed (Benefit).
Touch-screen 1400W (Feature) heats faster than convection ovens (Advantage) — you save 20 minutes per cooking session compared to your old oven (Benefit).
Dishwasher-safe basket (Feature) cleans in seconds (Advantage) — no more scrubbing burnt-on grease, the chore most people give up on (Benefit).
The anatomy of a great product description
A description that converts has six parts in this order:
Part 1 — The product title
A title isn't a description, but it's where reading starts. Format:
[Specific product] + [Key benefit or use] + [Differentiator]
Examples:
-
❌ "Hair Oil"
-
✅ "Argan Hair Oil — Repairs Split Ends in 14 Days, Made in Algeria"
-
❌ "Wireless Earbuds"
-
✅ "Wireless Earbuds with 30-Hour Battery — Sweat-Proof for Running"
Part 2 — The one-line hook (1 sentence)
The very first line. It must do one of:
- Make a specific promise
- Identify the exact buyer
- State the single biggest benefit
For mothers of toddlers who can't sit still during haircuts — a kids' hair clipper that's silent, cordless, and shaped like a fish.
Part 3 — The benefit paragraph (2–4 sentences)
Expand on the hook. Use sensory language. Avoid jargon.
Bad:
Our cream contains hyaluronic acid and ceramides for advanced hydration.
Better:
By the third morning, your face feels different. The dryness in the corners of your nose disappears, the foundation glides instead of clinging, your skin actually looks rested even when you're not.
Part 4 — The bullet specs (3–6 bullets)
Now you can list. Use this structure for each bullet:
[Specific number or fact] — [What that means for the buyer]
- 48-hour delivery to all 58 wilayas — order Monday, wear it Wednesday
- 100% combed cotton — no pilling after 50 washes, we guarantee it
- Available in sizes XS–4XL — a true fit for every body, no "size up if in doubt" games
- 30-day no-questions return — if it doesn't work, we pay the return shipping
Part 5 — The trust block (1–3 lines)
What evidence supports your claims?
- Real customer count: "Over 12,000 women in Algeria use this serum"
- A guarantee: "If you don't see a difference in 30 days, money back, no questions"
- A press mention or feature: "Featured by Femmes Magazine, May 2026"
- A social proof number: "4.7/5 from 487 verified reviews"
Part 6 — The decision push (1 line)
Don't end with a period. End with a nudge:
- "Only 14 left at this price."
- "Order before midnight — ships tomorrow."
- "Free delivery this week only."
- "Try it for 30 days. If you don't love it, we'll refund every dinar."

SEO inside the description
A description doesn't only sell to your visitors — it tells Google what the page is about. Without keyword stuffing:
- Use the product name in the first 100 characters. This is the single most important SEO signal on the page.
- Naturally include 2–3 related searches in the body. If you're selling a "vitamin C serum", words like "brighten dark spots", "morning routine", "for oily skin" should appear if relevant.
- Write at least 250 words. Below that, Google sees a thin page. Above 600, no benefit but more reader fatigue. Aim for 350–500.
- Use H2/H3 subheadings. "How to use", "What's in the box", "FAQ" — each section is another chance to match a search.
- Translate for every locale. Each market needs its own description, never an automatic translation only. The hooks change with the language, and the search behaviour does too.
The 9 mistakes that kill conversion
- Pasting the supplier's description. They wrote it to be safe, not to sell.
- Listing specs without translating them into benefits. Nobody buys "5,200 mAh" — they buy "two full charges before bed".
- Empty adjectives. "Premium", "high-quality", "luxurious" mean nothing because everyone uses them.
- All-caps urgency. "LIMITED TIME!!! BUY NOW!!!" reads as scam.
- Hiding the price decision. Don't make me look at the page three times before I see what it costs.
- No size, fit, or compatibility info. The single biggest source of returns.
- Walls of text without bullets. Mobile readers skim. Help them.
- Generic CTAs. "Buy now" works. "Find your colour now" works better.
- Forgetting the FAQ section. Anticipated objections are converted objections.
A 10-minute description writing workflow
For every new product, run this:
- Minute 1 — Write down the customer's exact problem in one sentence.
- Minute 2 — Write the benefit (not the feature) that solves it.
- Minute 3 — List the three biggest objections a buyer might have.
- Minute 4 — Write the one-line hook (the very first line on the page).
- Minute 5–7 — Write the benefit paragraph (2–4 sentences).
- Minute 8 — Write the 5 bullet specs (each as
fact — meaning). - Minute 9 — Write the trust block (one piece of evidence per claim).
- Minute 10 — Write the closing nudge.
Don't edit yet. Move on to the next product. Edit them all in a batch the next day — fresh eyes catch what tired eyes miss.
FAQ
How long should a product description be?
350–500 words is the sweet spot for most e-commerce items. Below 250 hurts SEO and feels lazy; above 600 loses the reader. Premium / high-consideration products (jewelry, electronics, mattresses) can justify 800+ words because the buyer is researching.
Do I need to write a unique description for every variant (color, size)?
No — but the master product description should mention all variants explicitly and use one keyword cluster. Each variant page only needs a unique title and a brief variant-specific line ("Available in Cobalt Blue — pairs beautifully with cream linens").
Should the description be the same on the product page and the ad?
No. The ad is a hook. The page is a deeper sell. The hook line in your ad might be the first line of your product page, but the rest of the description is longer, more visual, and answers more objections.
Can I use AI to write product descriptions?
You can — and the savings are real for catalog-scale work. But never publish AI output without editing for tone, accuracy, and your specific customer's language. Generic AI text is recognizable to readers and erodes trust over time. Use it as a draft, not a final.
Should I include the price in the description?
Don't write the price inside the description text — your platform already displays it prominently elsewhere. Repeating it in copy creates more places to fix when the price changes.
How often should I rewrite descriptions?
Audit your top 10 best-sellers every quarter. The rest, once a year. Update everything when your brand voice or product positioning shifts materially.
